Don’t do limo limbo

You’re going to do all kinds of dances at prom — a slow dance, a fast one, maybe even the “Gangnam Style” “pony dance.” But one number you don’t want to shuffle through is the “limo-limbo” or getting involved in an impossible tango that totally bogs you down. Avoid stress and keep things as simple as a one-two step by staying organized from the get go. Here’s how to steer clear of any hazardous twists and turns while renting a limo for prom:

Who’s really in your Scooby gang?

Before you choose between Bose and Beats speakers, confirm a final head count. Exactly how many people are going to split the cost of the limo with you? Get a few price options from a couple different limo companies in order to get a general idea as early as possible. Also, make sure to play around with the group size while figuring out costs because most likely, once you present the ballpark price tags to your crew, more than half of your friends will drop out. So, do some research first and get a “for real” party size.

Don’t be a limo-bimbo

Once you know how many people are going to travel to prom in luxury with you — instead of in their mom’s minivan or on top of their date’s handlebars — determine how long you will need the limo. Does each couple need to be picked up? Should there be one central pick-up location? Why are all these questions hurting your head?

Scott Mendez, of Ro Sal Limos, recommends finding a company that offers prom packages with flexible hours. A solid deal, for example, would allow guests to use the limo for up to 10 hours, three of which can be used for any purpose or destination.

Once the package has been chosen, Mendez suggests raising plenty of safety questions.

“There are a lot of limousine companies that operate under the radar and don’t do things the right way,” he warns. “Check to see if the company is properly licensed and insured.” In addition, ask for vehicle inspection records and make sure to read every page of the contract before signing.

Size does matter

Prom is all about the “wow” factor and the limo should do the night justice. Today, almost all limos, regardless of size, come equipped with iPod plugins, CD and DVD players, fiber-optic lighting, and flat screen TVs. However, the most notable differences between most limos are their actual size. If the party is on the larger side — and particularly raucous — there are the mega-sized luxury big boys. These include the Hummer, Escalade, Cadillac, and Infinity models. For those who can’t seem to edit the guest list, there are mini-party buses, which can seat up to 30 passengers and are usually large enough to have a small dance floor. Yet, for a typical prom party of about four to 10 guests, there are the classically cool, mid-sized Chrysler models, which resemble a Rolls Royce.

Get a prom-approved ride

There are a few limousine options you should avoid. Remember, this party celebrates the end of an era and the start of a new chapter, so steer clear of any car labeled vintage, antique, or are from the ’20s, ’30s or ’40s. These models are usually reserved for weddings, pretty costly, and limit the party size to a maximum of four guests.

We suggest opting for something way cooler like a limo that looks like a stretched-out Mini Cooper. These red or hot pink models are equipped with extra layer of pizzazz, like a small pool in its trunk — eliminating any need to drive around looking for an after party!

Teens and parents love limos for prom night and sweet 16 parties, but even placing your transportation needs in the hand of a chauffeured transportation provider isn't always enough to guarantee teens will make safe choices.

Prom is coming up at school. I wonder if my kids will want to have a limo for it. We didn't have one when I went to my school dances, but it's kind of traditional now. I agree that it would probably go over better than if they borrowed my minivan.
