You’re all dolled up and ready to go. Bubbling with excitement, you start making your way down the stairs — when suddenly! — you notice a banana peel. And just as you’re thinking, who leaves a banana peel on a staircase? your foot gets caught in your dress, you tumble down the stairs, and land, face first, into a coconut cream pie right in front of your date. Graceful!
And guess what? Most likely, nothing that over-the-top will ever happen to you. But, prom-night hiccups can occur, just like what happened in the following real-life tales of prom night trauma. They may seem as messy as a face-full of pie, but we don’t lie, whatever happens, you will survive:
Walking on pins and needles
“I was pinning the corsage on my date, when suddenly she screamed. I struck her with the needle. But it wasn’t my fault, I was nervous. I was being stared down by her father that I had never met before!” — Teddy T.
A sticky situation
“On our way to prom, our limo’s axel broke on a highway that was being tarred. We didn’t want to wait for the tow stuck, so we walked 20 minutes to the exit … in tar.” — Sol Park
Not very strapping
“I told my dressmaker that I wanted a strapless dress and at the last minute, she made it with straps. As soon as I sat in the limo one of the straps broke and I had to tuck both of them into my dress. Luckily, nothing ‘spilled’ out, but I was so upset.” — Fiorella Bennett
It didn’t float their boat
“My boyfriend’s prom was on a yacht. It was a windy night and it kept rocking. People didn’t really dance because they were trying to keep their balance and … their dinner down.”
— Jenniva Saunders
“Two girls showed up to my prom in the same salmon-colored tube-top dress and they made a huge stink about it. They took it outside and were making such a fuss, they were asked to leave prom early because they were causing so much trouble.”— Anonymous
Dark side of the boo
“I was supposed to see Roger Waters (from Pink Floyd) on the same day as my prom, but decided to go to prom instead. I ended up leaving prom an hour in and eating at Denny’s. I should’ve seen Pink Floyd instead.” — Kara Weber
Tardy for the party
“My prom was in a ballroom in Midtown. A bunch of my friends and I decided to take a limo and told our driver use to Kent Street. So, he took Kent Street — in Brooklyn, not Manhattan. We ended up being an hour late.” — Anonymous
A not so happy meal
“The venue my school rented for prom went bankrupt, so at the last minute it was moved to the gym of a hospital. Our dates were so worried about getting their dresses dirty they didn’t really eat dinner and wanted to go to McDonald’s after the dance, which we did … all dressed up.”— jacob cole
